Your initial consultation

Considering surgery naturally comes with many questions, and your initial consultation is an opportunity to discuss them in detail. Your consultation, which typically takes around 30 minutes, is designed to give you a clear understanding of your surgery options and what to expect.

During your appointment, I will:

  • Take the time to understand your specific issue, surgical concerns, and your desired results.
  • Assess your condition or cosmetic surgery requirements, and discuss your treatment option/s.
  • Explain your recommended procedure, including the expected benefits, potential risks and the likely recovery process.
  • Outline the next steps, including any imaging or investigations that may be required.
  • Answer all of your questions, so you can make an informed decision, prior to proceeding to the next stage.

By the end of the consultation, you’ll have a good understanding of your treatment options, what your surgery would involve, and the post recovery process. It’s all part of my approach of providing a full care service.

Funding by an ACC Claim or Private Medical Insurance

Surgery funded by an ACC Claim

For treatment to proceed using an ACC claim there a few key steps. Most importantly, is having your claim lodged correctly immediately after your accident. This is usually done by a GP, emergency department, or an urgent care clinic.

Before booking your initial consultation you need to have an accepted ACC claim number.

During your initial consult your injury is assessed. We then submit a comprehensive report to ACC detailing the exact surgical plan, expected outcomes, and itemised costs. ACC reviews our clinical notes and report, and then comes back with their decision regarding funding under ACC.  The ACC review process can take a few weeks, up to several months, depending on the complexity of the case.

There may be some urgent situations where funding is approved automatically, or can be expedited, to get your procedure approved within a few days.

Private Medical Insurance

  • Private health insurance generally covers illnesses, functional issues, and medical conditions not caused by an ‘accident’. Purely cosmetic procedures (undertaken solely to alter appearance) are not covered by health insurance. Note: ACC generally covers ‘accident’ related injuries.
  • To ensure your initial consultation is covered by your insurer, you will generally need a referral letter from your General Practitioner (GP) stating that a specialist assessment is required.
  • For any recommended surgery, our practice will provide you with a comprehensive clinical report and a detailed cost estimate. You will need to submit these to your insurer to secure ‘Prior Approval’ before we can proceed with your surgery.
  • For Southern Cross Health Insurance members undergoing approved procedures, our clinic can apply for prior approval and invoice your insurer directly on your behalf. This minimizes your out-of-pocket expenses and eliminates the need for you to pay upfront and claim money back.
